System Data Is Eating 30 GB. Here's What's Actually In There.
Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage and there it is at the bottom of the list: System Data, sometimes 8 GB, sometimes 30, occasionally 60. It has no tap-through, no file list, no delete button. Just a number that grows.
Most of what's written about it is guesswork, and that's partly Apple's fault, because System Data isn't really a category. It's a remainder — the total minus everything iOS could confidently attribute to something else. Understanding that changes which fixes are worth your time.
What's genuinely in there
In rough order of how much space they typically account for:
- Caches, mostly Safari's. Web content, offline reading lists, service worker data. This is usually the single largest contributor and the easiest to reclaim.
- Streaming buffers. Music, podcasts and video apps hold aggressive local caches, and some of it is filed as system rather than app data. Heavy Apple Music offline use can be several gigabytes here.
- Message and mail attachments mid-lifecycle, plus their thumbnails and previews.
- Logs, crash reports and diagnostics. Small individually, persistent collectively.
- Update files. A downloaded iOS update waiting to install is often multiple gigabytes, and it does not always remove itself promptly after a failed attempt.
- Files genuinely in transition — being uploaded, converted, or indexed. This is why the number moves on its own and why it can drop overnight without you doing anything.
Note what's *not* in that list: your photos, your apps and your documents are all counted elsewhere. System Data is overhead, which is why there's no way to browse it.
First, is yours actually abnormal?
Under about 10–15 GB is normal and chasing it is a waste of an evening — it fluctuates by several gigabytes on its own, and iOS reclaims cache space automatically when the disk gets tight. That last point matters: a lot of System Data is space iOS is *holding*, not space that's *lost*, and it will hand it back when something else needs it.
Above 20 GB is worth acting on. Above 50 GB, or a number that keeps climbing after everything below, you're probably not looking at cache at all — see the last section.
The three things that reliably work
1. Clear Safari. Settings → Apps → Safari → Clear History and Website Data. Then, in the same screen, Advanced → Website Data, and remove what's left. This regularly recovers several gigabytes on a phone that's been in daily use for a couple of years. Cost: you're signed out of sites, and your history goes.
2. Restart the phone, properly. Not lock and unlock — a full power off, thirty seconds, power on. Temporary files that are only cleaned at boot get cleaned, and pending deletions are finalised. On a phone that hasn't been off in months this alone can be worth a few gigabytes, and it costs nothing.
3. Offload the heaviest cache-holders. For streaming apps in particular, Settings → General → iPhone Storage → tap the app → Offload App removes the binary and its caches while keeping documents and data, and reinstalling restores your place. Deleting and reinstalling outright goes further but takes your downloads with it.
Then wait a day before judging. The number is calculated lazily and often catches up several hours later.
What doesn't work
Filling the phone with junk video to force a cache purge — a suggestion that circulates endlessly — works in the sense that iOS does start reclaiming, but you're deliberately pushing the device to 100% full to do it. Writing to a completely full disk is one of the reliable ways to end up with a corrupted storage index and a backup that hangs at 0 KB. Don't.
Third-party cleaner apps cannot touch System Data. iOS sandboxing means no app can read or delete another app's caches, let alone the system's — anything claiming otherwise is selling you a screen that shows the same number you already have. Resetting All Settings doesn't clear caches either.
When it's very large, it usually isn't System Data
If you're seeing 60 GB or more, or the figure keeps growing after a Safari clear and a restart, the likely explanation is that iOS has mis-attributed real files to the remainder. A stalled photo sync, an interrupted restore or a migration between devices can all leave files that exist on disk but no longer belong to any category — so they land in the leftovers.
Two things worth checking in that case. Bottom of Settings → Photos: if sync is stalled, that's a known cause of space that behaves strangely. And look for impossible figures anywhere in the storage list — an app claiming more space than the phone physically holds means the index itself is wrong, and no amount of cache clearing will fix it.
The unglamorous conclusion
On the overwhelming majority of phones, System Data is 10 GB of cache doing its job, and the storage problem is somewhere much more ordinary. When people finally check, the number that's actually out of control is Photos — several times larger, and made of things they chose to keep.
That one has no setting. It's thousands of small decisions, and the reason it never gets done is that every attempt starts from the beginning again. Blanc removes that specific problem by remembering what you've already ruled on. And if you haven't worked out where your space went yet, start here.
